We are doing a bit of research into transitioning into organic cropping. How do different certification bodies compare? There seem to be many options.
Are they very different? Are there any particular questions I should be asking?
Yes the certifying bodies do vary in a few ways . But at the end of the day they all follow the same national standards. You also need to be USDA NOP so you can sell your product.
We are with Ausqual. We went with them because we just paid the fees for the year and they didn’t work it out on a percentage of our income and that suited us.
NASSA, Certified Organic, Bio-dynamic, Regenerative Organic, Australian Organic Certification (AOC). Each will vary slightly but please not that NO chemicals can be used. So if you have a sudden outbreak of lice in your sheep or a pest attack on your orchard you must only use approved organic methods. Each service provider will audit your opperation on a regular basis to ensure you meet your certification. We spent $12,000 getting ours for our multi-farm business before swapping over.
