Does anyone have any tips or experience with mothering up first calving heifers with their calves? Thanks in advance.
Hi Andy and Jane,
A comment on our social page account from @jostrong12:
We tag each calf within a day or two of birth and use it's mothers number. Works beautifully for us, however we calve in relatively small paddocks and check a few times a day. Might not be possible for you?
A comment on our social media from @the.cattlemans.wife:
First time calving heifers can be difficult. While the majority will clave with no problems, a small few will calve but are missing that 'connection' with their babies, and will not let them drink, not want them and abandon them unfortunately. The ones having trouble mothering up, we put in a small pen with the calf and monitor them, sometimes it works, so.sometimes it doesnt. We have 400 new heifers calving this season, and 5 have not mothered up.
